Mrs. I. Machinandiarena, IB MYP Coordinator Can we use this attribute from the IB learner profile (1) as a way to celebrate Wheatley School cultural diversity while promoting respect, understanding and peace? At Wheatley, as an IB World School, we understand open-mindedness as a critical appreciation of our own cultures and personal histories, as well as the values and traditions of others. We are open to a variety of points of view and are willing to grow in order to better understand others. Together we aim to build a welcoming and strong community free of bias and misconceptions. WS strives to develop an open-mindedness culture with the learner at the centre of this model. It includes a balanced relationship among the student, the learner profile, teaching and leadership. This model presents five dimensions of institutional open-mindedness: an open-minded curriculum based on freedom and flexibility open-minded pedagogies, that is the willingness of teachers to explore alternative and innovative approaches and take risks to create learning opportunities an open-minded leadership that models open-mindedness as an attribute and a value an active open-mindedness that transforms attitudes into actions an inclusive open-mindedness, which values individuals for who they are, and resisting a school culture of compliance and conformity (2) Ultimately, open-mindedness helps our community to celebrate our differences, to create a safe and caring environment for our children and to use dialogue to resolve our issues. 1 IB Learner Profile.
