Sarah Chan Grade 8 On October 20, Upper Elementary had a special guest speaker come to Wheatley. The speaker’s name was Adam Shoalts, and he came to share his voyage across the Arctic with us. Adam Shoalts is a member of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society. He traveled all alone across the arctic circle, on his feet, pack raft, and canoe for almost 4000 kilometers! He voyaged up mountains, up rivers, across the tundra, through the subarctic forest, and down wild waterways while witnessing, and living through some of the world’s greatest wilderness. Adam Shoalts shared magnificent pictures of wild animals that he witnessed while in the Arctic, and he talked to us about encounters he had with these wild animals, such as the Muskox and the Grizzly Bear. He was especially surprised when a student in grade 4 was able to guess what animal he was showing us (the Muskox), on the second try. Adam Shoalts also wrote two books about his voyage across the Arctic, and he gave us a copy of each for our school library. One of the books is named, “A History of Canada in Ten Maps” and the other, “Alone Against the North.” The Upper Elementary along with the grade 4s really enjoyed listening to his stories. We learned so much about perseverance from his experience!
