A child-centred education

The Montessori method is a child centered, alternative educational method based on the child development theories originated by Italian educator Dr. Maria Montessori.

This method of education is characterised by emphasising self-directed activity, on the part of the child, and clinical observation, on the part of the teacher. It stresses the importance of adapting the child’s learning environment to his or her development level, and the role of physical activity in absorbing abstract concepts and learning practical skills.

The use of auto-didactic (self-correcting) equipment for introducing and learning concepts is used, and reading is taught via phonics.

The Primary division provides Montessori preschool programs for children 18 months to 5 years of age along with the Lower Elementary division which encompasses grades 1 to 4.

Wheatley school is accredited by the Canadian Council of Montessori Administrators.

The expansive mind of the child is limited only by the resources in his environment and stamina of the adults who prepare it.
